Movies During Joblessness – Watch ’em or Make ’em

My career has been one of on-and-off in terms of employment and income.  One time several years ago I was “in-between” and wanted to check off a box on my career bucket list – producing and directing a movie.

So, I enlisted in the 48 Hour Movie competition and recruited a crew.  I ended up with a team of very talented individuals.  It included some experienced and professional actors, writers, and musicians.  I was honored and humbled.

Producing Metal Sandwich was not just about making a movie so I could say that I did it.  Moreover it was about keeping sharp, learning new things, and filling in gaps on my resume.  That’s right, I actually put it on my resume as a leadership role which required great team-building, planning, and execution on my part.  I do the same thing with building and maintaining little websites.  Each one is a project which has its own development cycle, requiring the same plans and actions as a client-paid project, albiet on a smaller scale.

I always recommend to job seekers and career builders, young and old, to stay busy, stay sharp, keep learning, and produce something for somebody during your in-betweens.  If you are not tech-savvy, then volunteer to help someone in need.  It can help fill gaps on your resume as well as make the world a better place.

Making the movie was very hard work.  While the actual production took only 48 hours, the prep and recruiting and brainstorming and meetings easily may have taken 84 hours.  However, it was also very satisfying.  This YouTube clip is my finished work.  I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it.
